C-SPAN Bus Visits Boardman High School to Encourage Civic Engagement

The C-SPAN bus is touring all 50 state capitals to celebrate the network’s 25th anniversary. It’s also making some other stops along the way, and it came to the Mahoning Valley under the sponsorship of Armstrong Cable. Boardman High School was one of the locations visited recently.

Aboard the bus are a number of interactive features and videos, and government officials also join in to enhance the experience for students and to encourage them to become engaged with government on the local, state and federal levels.

Ohio State Representative John Boccieri of Poland (D-59th) and State Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Boardman (D-33rd) were among the officials who joined the bus in Boardman. Representing Boardman Township were Trustees Tom Costello, Larry Moliterno and Brad Calhoun; Fiscal Officer William Leicht; and Administrator Jason Loree, who is shown addressing the students.

The RIGHT Way to Dispose of Unused/Expired Medications

The Boardman Police Department offers a 24/7 Prescription Drug Drop-off Program that allows township residents to safely dispose of medications they have not used or that have expired.

You should never throw unused medications in the trash or flush them down the toilet. This can create a dangerous situation for both people and the environment.

Instead, bring them to the Boardman Police Department at 8299 Market Street Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For after-hours drop-off, please enter the Police Department lobby and use the phone on the wall to speak to a dispatcher.

Prescription and over-the-counter medicine disposal only; syringes, needles or liquids will not be accepted.

All medications will be incinerated. There is no need to remove prescription labels.

New Zoning Dept. Program Will Enhance Access, Transparency

The Boardman Township Zoning Department is acquiring a comprehensive new software system that will bring its services into the modern digital era, with positive implications for both department employees and the public.

The MyGov software system will be coming online soon, and it will greatly streamline department operations that formerly relied largely on manual tracking with pen and paper. The new system tracks everything electronically, and provides the opportunity for all data entered into it to be recalled and analyzed instantaneously.

The change will enable Zoning Department staff to work more efficiently, and also to be more proactive in inspecting properties and to devote more time to advance planning.

Most importantly, the MyGov system will make the department’s work more transparent and accessible for Boardman residents and businesses. Business owners will soon be able to submit permit materials online, while residents can search properties by name or address or see them on a map, and get updates on the township’s response to complaints.

The system will also guide those looking to invest in the community through the process of submitting paperwork for their project.

The MyGov system will be rolled out in stages over the next few months. Check the Zoning Department’s home page for updates and links to the system, which will feature modules for permits and inspections, code enforcement, online GIS and a request tracker.
