Groundbreaking Ceremonies Mark Start of Safety Services Memorial Project

Boardman Township officials and many others who have been involved in a project to honor first responders both in the township and nationwide were on hand for a special ceremony on March 13.

Ground was broken for Boardman’s Safety Services Memorial, which will be located on the grounds of Boardman’s Main Fire Station at the corner of Market Street and Stadium Drive.

Fire Chief Mark Pitzer thanked the organizations, businesses and individuals who have spearheaded this project — in particular, the  Boardman Lions Club, Boardman Police FOP Lodge 43 and Boardman Firefighters Local 1176. The Memorial is designed to honor those men and women of Law Enforcement and the Fire Service nationwide who have paid the supreme sacrifice by dying in the line of duty — as well as to recognize members of the Boardman Police and Fire Departments, past and present, who protect the community.

Fundraising for the project has been ongoing, and while there is a sufficient amount to begin construction, an additional $15,000 is needed to reach the goal of $75,000. More information about the Safety Services Memorial —including an online donation form — can be found at SafetyServicesMemorial.com

Survey Seeks Public Input for Zoning Code Update

Boardman Township is currently working with a zoning consultant to assess the need for changes to the current Boardman Township Zoning Resolution. The township is seeking input on how the residents and business owners would like those regulations revised to address ongoing needs and concerns.

The Boardman Township Planning and Zoning Department has created a survey to gather this input. The survey has a number of questions pertaining to properties, vehicles and other issues affecting Boardman residents and businesses.

You can make your voice heard now by participating in this survey, which can be found by clicking on this link.

Safe Routes to School Meeting Planned for Nov. 27

The Safe Routes to School program was created to encourage and enable K-8 students to walk or ride their bicycles to school. The program is administered by the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Similar programs have been implemented in Lowellville, Poland, Canfield and several other area communities. Options are now being considered for bringing this program to Boardman.

There will be a public meeting in the small auditorium at Boardman Center Intermediate School, 7410 Market Street, on Tuesday, November 27 at 5:30 p.m.

Input from parents and others will be invited at this meeting. Your responses will be used to help identify target areas for infrastructure, and will allow us to address any concerns that you might have regarding infrastructure surrounding the schools. Input can also be given via the survey available at this link.

Safe Routes funding can be used for physical improvements (engineering) such as improved crosswalks, sidewalks, lighting, etc. Funds can also be used for education and encouragement programming, such as bicycle rider/pedestrian training and a frequent pedestrian/rider program.

This Weekend: Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries!

Daylight savings time will come to an end this Sunday at 2:00 a.m. For years the slogan of “change your clock, change your batteries” has been used to help people make a lifesaving decision.

Along with setting your clocks back one hour, the Boardman Township Fire Department reminds all residents to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

A fully functioning smoke detector allows for early detection of a fire and will give you much-needed time to escape safely. The Boardman Fire Department recommends having smoke detectors on each level of your home and in sleeping areas.

We also recommend the use of carbon monoxide detectors. These detectors are the only way you will be able to detect increased levels of carbon monoxide in your home. We encourage residents to have these installed outside of sleeping areas and on every level of your home.

In addition to changing the batteries twice a year, we would like to see residents test their smoke detectors monthly to make sure they are working properly.

Finally, we recommend replacing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors every 10 years.

If you have any questions, please contact the Boardman Fire Prevention Office. We’re happy to assist in any way we can.

Fire Department Bests Police in Annual Battle of the Badges

The Boardman Fire Department avenged last year’s defeat by beating the Police Department 13-12 in the 5th annual Battle of the Badges 9/11 charity softball game.

Ironically, that was the same score in last year’s game when the Police Department came out on top. The rivalry between the departments is a friendly one, and all for a good cause, as donations collected at the game will go to support the Boardman Safety Services Memorial.
