Cranberry Run Flood Mitigation Project Update
|
Boardman Township officials, along with regional partners, signed a letter tonight, requesting State of Ohio support for the Cranberry Run Flood Mitigation Project, a major public safety and infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing long-standing flooding issues in central Boardman. The letter explains that decades of unplanned development—particularly without adequate stormwater management—have led to worsening flooding that now impacts residential neighborhoods, businesses, major transportation routes like U.S. Route 224, and thousands of daily commuters. More than 3,500 downstream residents are directly affected. The proposed project is a comprehensive, science-based solution that includes stream restoration, new stormwater detention systems, culvert replacements, and rerouting of drainage infrastructure. These improvements are designed to increase stormwater capacity, reduce flooding risks, and protect over 250 properties during severe weather events.

Boardman Township has already secured $35.4 million in federal FEMA Flood Mitigation Assistance funding—the first award of its kind for the Township. The letter emphasizes that additional state support is critical to complete the funding package and move the project forward.
Overall, the project is positioned as a transformative investment that will enhance public safety, protect homes and businesses, strengthen infrastructure, and support long-term economic resilience across the Mahoning Valley.
