Phase II AWARE Campaign:

These posters are a component of the township’s Phase II public education campaign. The goal is to increase public awareness about non-point source pollution and provide storm water pollution prevention guidance. When storm water runs over the land, it picks up pollutants and deposits them into streams, lakes, wetlands and some underground sources of drinking water. These pollutants are known as non-point source pollution because they cannot be traced to one specific source and are therefore very difficult to control. Non-point source pollution is the leading cause of water quality problems in the nation and the State of Ohio. It affects drinking water supplies, wildlife habitat, recreational areas and fisheries. Storm water awareness can help keep our local waterways and drinking water clean. The posters were made possible through a grant from the Green Team and by Mahoning SWCD, Mahoning County Engineer’s Office and  AWARE, the Alliance for Watershed and Riparian Easements.

GlenBridge Enhancement Project -

Boardman will benefit from a Transportation Enhancement grant from the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments which will upgrade a bridge on Glenwood Avenue in the Township. The Boardman Township trustees supported the filing of the application by the County Engineer’s office and also pledged the Township’s commitment to provide some of the engineering costs associated therewith.

The existing bridge was constructed in 1952 as part of a Glenwood Ave. roadway extension project. The bridge is a 32’ long single span steel beam structure that carries four (4) lanes of traffic over Krieder’s entrance to Mill Creek Park. The abutments and wing walls are faced with an ornamental sandstone brick which compliments other similar structures in the nearby park. Though built with sidewalks for future considerations, no walkway was ever extended down Glenwood Ave.

Brookwood Ave. has a partial sidewalk, and Mill Creek Rd. has none. The sidewalks that come off of Overhill Dr. and Newport Dr. end some 20’from the curb line. All abutting streets have sidewalks that lead thru the neighborhoods and eventually to the commercial areas of Market Street. Along Mill Creek Rd. is St. Mark’s Church, and the Krieder’s entrance to Mill Creek Park is off of Brookwood Ave.  Neither one of these features is safely accessible by pedestrians. “The Glen” area of Boardman Township is a designated Historic District and abuts this project to the east. This area is filled with lamp post lighting that gives The Glen its distinctive characteristic. Traffic counts in the project area consist of Glenwood Ave. at nearly 11,000 vehicles per day. Brookwood and Mill
Creek are estimated at 2,000 and 800 respectively.
